Nagarkot is a serene hill station located about 32 km east of Kathmandu, Nepal, perched at an altitude of around 2,175 meters (7,136 feet). It is renowned for its stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest on clear days. Nagarkot is also famous for its sunrise and sunset views, making it a popular retreat for nature lovers and photographers. Changu Narayan is a historic and sacred Hindu temple situated on a hilltop about 12 km east of Kathmandu, near Bhaktapur. It is considered the oldest temple in Nepal, dating back to the 4th century and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcasing intricate wood and stone carvings, ancient inscriptions, and rich architectural details. The surrounding area is dotted with traditional Newari villages, offering a glimpse into Nepal’s cultural heritage. Changu Narayan is also part of several hiking routes, connecting to Nagarkot, making it a perfect blend of history and nature.
You’ll be picked up early in the morning from your hotel in Kathmandu. The drive to Nagarkot takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. As you head out of the city, enjoy the scenic views of rural Nepal and rolling hills along the way.
The first stop is the Nagarkot View Tower, where you'll witness one of the most spectacular sunrises in the region. On clear days, you can see the majestic Himalayan Range, including peaks like Mount Everest, Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and Manaslu. The sunrise over the mountains is an incredible photo opportunity.
After sunrise, enjoy a traditional Nepali breakfast, usually served at a local restaurant or hotel in Nagarkot. Options may include momo (dumplings), dal bhat (lentil soup and rice), or pancakes.
After breakfast, begin the hike from Nagarkot to Changunarayan, which will take approximately 3 to 4 hours. The trail offers picturesque views of terraced fields, lush forests, and local villages. You'll also get glimpses of the Himalayan peaks, as well as wildlife and nature along the way. Your guide will provide you with insights into the culture, religion, and nature of the region. You'll pass through small villages where you can see how local people live, interact, and work.
After the hike, you'll reach Changunarayan Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is one of the oldest Hindu temples in the Kathmandu Valley, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is known for its stunning carvings, woodwork, and architecture. Your guide will explain the significance of the temple and its history.

After exploring the temple, you’ll have a chance to relax and enjoy a delicious meal at a local restaurant near Changunarayan. You’ll typically be served traditional dishes such as dal bhat or other Nepali specialties.
After lunch, you’ll be driven back to your hotel in Kathmandu. The return journey will take about 1 to 1.5 hours.
