Highlights of the Ama Dablam Expedition – 25 Days
Trip Overview
The Ama Dablam Expedition is a 25-day journey designed for adventurers with prior mountaineering and high-altitude trekking experience. Towering at 6,812 meters in the heart of the Khumbu region, Ama Dablam is not only a technically captivating climb but also a dream peak for climbers around the world. Its elegant structure, often likened to a mother cradling a child, earned it the name Ama Dablam meaning “Mother’s Necklace” in the Sherpa language. Located just 20 kilometers from Mount Everest, Ama Dablam rewards climbers with jaw-dropping views of many Himalayan heavyweights including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Kanchenjunga, Nuptse, Pumori, and Baruntse. Despite a failed attempt in 1958, the mountain was successfully climbed in 1961 via the Southwest Ridge by Mike Gill, Barry Bishop, Mike Ward, and Wally Romanes a route that remains the standard today. Our expedition is divided into two major segments: a trekking and acclimatization phase, and the summit phase. The journey also features three peak ascents: Kala Patthar (5,545 m), Lobuche East (6,119 m), and Ama Dablam (6,812 m), all within just three weeks. Though demanding, this expedition promises a rewarding blend of Himalayan adventure, cultural immersion, and physical achievement.
How the Journey Begins
The adventure starts with a scenic flight into Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. From there, we trek to the bustling Sherpa hub of Namche Bazaar, following the well-known trail toward Everest Base Camp. This acclimatization trek also includes the ascent of Kala Patthar, a famous viewpoint offering one of the best panoramas of the Everest region. Next, we proceed to Lobuche High Camp and climb Lobuche East Peak, which aids in altitude acclimatization and boosts our confidence before attempting Ama Dablam.
In the second phase of the expedition, we head to Ama Dablam Base Camp and begin our technical ascent. The trail to Camp I (5,700 m) involve mostly rock climbing. As we move higher, mixed terrain dominates the route to Camp II, situated on a narrow ridge at around 6,000 meters – often described as a nest perched high above the valleys. From Camp III (6,277 m), we make our final push to the summit, navigating through exposed ridges, snowy faces, and breathtaking views in every direction. After a successful summit, we descend gradually via Pangboche, Tengboche, and Namche, eventually returning to Lukla. The expedition concludes with a flight back to Kathmandu, where we celebrate the success of a truly life-changing Himalayan experience.
Welcome to Nepal! Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our representative will be waiting to greet you and assist with your transfer to the hotel. After check-in, take some time to rest and recover from your journey. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner and orientation, where you'll meet your expedition guide and fellow team members.
Today is reserved for detailed preparation. You'll attend a comprehensive briefing led by experienced guides who will explain the logistics, safety protocols, and day-by-day breakdown of the expedition. This is also the day for final gear checks, rental arrangements (if needed), and permit verifications. If time allows, you may explore the cultural landmarks of Kathmandu, such as Swayambhunath or Boudhanath Stupa.
Early in the morning, catch a scenic mountain flight to Lukla, the legendary gateway to the Khumbu region. After meeting the porters and final packing, begin your trek on a gradually descending trail through beautiful Sherpa villages and forested paths. Reach the charming village of Phakding along the Dudh Koshi River for an overnight stay.
Today’s trek involves several suspension bridge crossings and a steady climb up through pine forests. You’ll pass villages like Monjo and Jorsale before entering Sagarmatha National Park. The final ascent is challenging, but you’ll be rewarded with your first glimpse of Everest and arrival in the vibrant Namche Bazaar, the main trading hub of the Everest region.
Take a well-earned rest day to help your body adjust to the altitude. You can opt for a short hike to the Everest View Hotel or Khumjung village for stunning mountain vistas, including Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Explore Namche’s bustling market, cafes, and bakeries, or visit the Sherpa Culture Museum.
Leave the busy main trail and take a quieter route toward the scenic village of Phortse. The trail offers fantastic views of the surrounding peaks and a chance to witness daily Sherpa life in a more tranquil setting. Arrive in Phortse, a picturesque settlement perched above the Dudh Koshi River.
Rejoin the classic Everest trail and follow the path along the Imja Khola. The trail gradually ascends through alpine meadows and yak herders’ settlements, offering continuous views of Ama Dablam. Upon reaching Dingboche, settle in for a restful evening in this beautiful valley surrounded by dramatic peaks.
To further support acclimatization, hike up to Nangkartshang Hill. This steep ascent is rewarded with panoramic views of Makalu, Island Peak, and the surrounding Himalayas. Return to Dingboche by midday and spend the rest of the day hydrating and relaxing.
The trail continues through alpine terrain, past the small village of Thukla and the poignant Everest Memorial, dedicated to climbers who have lost their lives in the Himalayas. As you ascend to Lobuche, towering peaks begin to dominate the landscape, including Nuptse and Pumori.
Begin the day trekking to Gorakshep, the last settlement before Everest Base Camp. After dropping off your gear, continue to EBC, where climbers from all over the world gather in the spring season. Explore the area, take photos, and soak in the energy of this legendary site before returning to Gorakshep for the night.
Wake early for the hike up Kala Patthar, known for offering the best ground-level view of Mount Everest. Witness the golden hues of sunrise striking the Himalayas before descending to Gorakshep and trekking back down to Lobuche.
Make a short yet steep trek to Lobuche High Camp. Here, your guides will provide pre-climb training on the use of crampons, ice axe, and harness. Rest early to prepare for your summit push the following morning.
Rise in the early hours for the final ascent of Lobuche East. The route includes snow slopes and ridgelines, requiring the use of fixed ropes and climbing gear. From the summit, marvel at panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and other nearby peaks. Descend carefully and trek down to either Pheriche or Pangboche.
Start your journey toward the next adventure-Ama Dablam. The trail to base camp is scenic and less trafficked, winding through rhododendron forests and high-altitude pastures. Upon reaching the base camp, settle in for a period of acclimatization and training.
Take a full day to rest, regain energy, and acclimate further. This is an essential phase before the technical climbing portion of the expedition begins. Spend time reviewing climbing plans, checking gear, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings of base camp.
Under the guidance of experienced mountaineering instructors, participate in a day of technical training. Practice fixed rope techniques, rappelling, ladder crossings, and other alpine skills on nearby rock and ice faces—crucial for the climb ahead.
Begin your ascent of Ama Dablam with a steady but steep climb to Camp 1. The route features rocky terrain and narrow ridgelines. Set up camp at one of the most dramatically located campsites in the Himalayas and prepare for the summit attempt.
A flexible window of four days is reserved for the summit push, depending on weather and team conditions. The ascent takes you through Camp 2 and possibly Camp 3, involving steep rock, snow, and ice sections. Reaching the summit of Ama Dablam offers one of the most rewarding views in the Himalayas. After the climb, descend safely to base camp.
After a successful summit, begin your descent to Namche Bazaar. The trail feels easier now as you lose altitude and pass-through familiar terrain. Celebrate your accomplishment with a comfortable night in Namche.
Continue descending through pine forests and Sherpa villages. Arrive in Lukla where you’ll enjoy your final night in the Khumbu region, sharing stories and reflections with the team.
Board a morning flight back to Kathmandu. Once back in the capital, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a leisurely afternoon. You may wish to explore local markets, dine at a traditional Nepali restaurant, or simply relax.
After breakfast, our team will transfer you to the airport for your international departure. Leave Nepal with unforgettable memories of your high-altitude adventure and the pride of having summited two of the region's iconic peaks.
